In an interview with the Yeni Şafak newspaper, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez addressed the latest developments in Black Sea gas, how Turkey’s daily oil production has increased with well drilling and the future importance of the Port of Filyos for the Turkey. Minister Dönmez reported that oil imports represent 92% of Turkey’s total need and said: “We have a production of 8%. We have 1% of production in natural gas. We import 99% of that. But I hope we reverse those rates with the discovery in the Black Sea. With the discovery in 2020, we quickly started intensive work on engineering studies, design and field development. We launched the first tubes into the water with a ceremony attended by our President. By the end of the year, we will complete the connection of these pipelines between the field and the onshore terminals. We will have completed the three pipelines by the end of the year. In the first phase, we will complete 10 wells. Our goal is a daily production of 10 million cubic meters from 10 wells. In the next 4 years, we will complete 10 wells in 40 wells. Thus, we will reach 40 million cubic meters. When it reaches maximum production, we will be able to meet almost all the natural gas needs of households in Turkey with our own gas.”

“WE WILL REACH THE PRODUCTION LEVEL OF 40 MILLION CUB METERS OF NATURAL GAS AS 2026-2027”

Minister Dönmez, on when 40 million cubic meters of natural gas production will be reached, said: “Let’s think like 2026-2027. We will complete 10 million cubic meters in the first quarter of next year. There is a lot of serious work both at sea and on land. It currently employs 5,200 people. We currently have 34 ships in the Black Sea, 3 of which are drilling,” he said.

Minister Dönmez highlighted that 34 ships, 3 of which are drilling, in the Black Sea will increase to 45 in July-August and said: “We consider Filyos as a coastal logistics hub. This is very significant both as a logistical hub of our Black Sea operations, as Romania has such a discovery if it makes such discoveries in neighboring countries. This is a potential that can be evaluated as a technical base that will at some point provide these services to the Black Sea,” he said.

“As for the ECONOMIC VALUE OF THE EXISTING RESERVE IN THE BLACK SEA, IF WE SELL EVERYTHING TODAY, THAT NUMBER COULD BE 400 BILLION DOLLARS”

Regarding the economic value of the existing Black Sea reserve, Minister Dönmez said: “As for the economic value of the existing Black Sea reserve, if we sell them all today, that value would be 400 billion dollars. It’s been 25 years of production. Therefore, we do not have a 25-year projection. As for what the prices will be, there is a lot of variation. There is potentially such a reserve value at today’s prices when requested. If asked last year, maybe we would have said 300 billion dollars. Maybe more next year. But either way, it’s a huge reserve and a price.”

“WE COMPLETE THE PROJECT IN 7 YEARS IN NORMAL CONDITIONS, IN 2.5 YEARS”

Minister Dönmez, who stated that the Black Sea natural gas project would not be completed before 7 years under normal conditions, said: “Now we will have started the first production in a period of 2.5 years. In other words, we are currently managing 6,000 work items together in the supply. Sometimes, we invest some equipment in the factory so that the material does not go elsewhere.”

“We drilled two producing wells in the field we named Martyr Esma Çevik in Gabar, their daily production is between 2,000 and 3,000 barrels”
Recalling that the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) increased its oil production from 41,000 to 61,000 barrels a day in the last 5 years, Minister Dönmez said: “So there is a 50% increase, but is it enough? Private sector production is around 15,000 barrels. We produce 8% of our consumption, but what’s nice is that our security units now clean and deliver to us in many areas that we couldn’t go in and investigate due to security issues in the past. We do seismic there. Then we drill. For example, we drilled two producing wells in the field we call Martyr Esma Çevik in Gabar, and their daily production is between 2,000 and 3,000 barrels. Considering the Turkish average is 100 barrels, our wellhead production,” he said.

“WE CAN DOWNLOAD TO GROUND ZERO IN THE REGIONS AND BORDERLANDS OF SYRIA”

Regarding production between 2,000 and 3,000 barrels produced from oil wells drilled in Gabar, Minister Dönmez said: “This is a very good number. We could not enter due to terrorism. We can go down to ground zero in the Syrian border regions and lands. We started to take the production. It is not very high, but it is necessary to increase the number. There are wells that were closed in the past. Sometimes we re-evaluate these wells. We have some in production. It’s going well,” he said.

“WE SEE THAT THE LOCAL SOURCE IS MORE ECONOMIC”

Emphasizing that domestic gas to be extracted from the Black Sea is more economical, Minister Dönmez said: “When we compare current prices with those abroad, our government supports our citizens in natural gas. Almost 75 percent. With this domestic gas, our citizens will win. We are heading towards a day where we will be profitable in every way, especially for our families.”
