Urban SUV Stellantis: three winners?

SUVs have dominated the automotive world for several years now. They swallowed up minivans and undermined the dominance of sedans in the entire car market. With the transition to electricity, they will still multiply, even if it is curious that we advocate for electricity to be more environmentally friendly, and that at the same time we put batteries in cars that are heavier, less aerodynamic and consume more than sedans. from which they often take a technical basis … But the way it is, and manufacturers are taking advantage of this wave of SUVs, introducing more and more new models.

Full of SUVs

The Stellantis Group, which emerged from the merger of the PSA and FCA groups, has under its brands a large number of SUVs from the Jeep brand, of course, as well as the Peugeot brand and its iconic models such as the Peugeot 2008, 3008 and 5008 (and the new 408 SUV sedan) And these are not the only Stellantis SUVs, as other brands such as Alfa Romeo, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Opel have one or more vehicles of this type in their range.

Peugeot 2008 provides its technical base

Despite having a large SUV division, Stellantis always wants more and the group has decided to hit hard in the urban SUV segment. Here’s how the three urban SUVs should arrive in the coming months. In order for brands to be able to produce these models while limiting development costs as much as possible, a common technical base such as Peugeot 2008. This is an e-CMP platform that can accommodate thermal and electric motors, because it is necessary to ensure the future and planned transition to all-electric vehicles of some group brands. So DS Automobiles should go all-electric in 2024, meaning we’ll keep hybrid engines for a while until there are new thermal engines. For Jeep it will be 2027, for Fiat 2027, for Opel 2028… But beware, this applies to Europe, because in other markets internal combustion engines will still be eligible for sale, and this is after 2035 (the date from which thermals will be banned for sale in Europe*). It’s really hard to imagine Jeep going all-electric in 2025 in the North American continent, which means a very large number of sales for this manufacturer.

For Jeep second city SUV

Let’s pause for a moment on Jeep to talk about the new 2008 Peugeot-based city SUV. And we already know what it will look like, as photos of the concept car were revealed by Stellantis earlier in the year. This is a small model that we have little to no information about other than these two images. However, we know that it will be in the range below the Jeep Renegade, a similar urban SUV, that it will only have two drives, even if a 4×4 project with two electric motors was considered for a while, but this project could finally be implemented to replace the Renegade . This Jeep Baby will be produced at the group’s plant in Tychy, Poland. If this is the first fully electric Jeep, then this model will also have internal combustion engines under the hood. In addition, the prototypes, which are currently undergoing development tests, are equipped with internal combustion engines.

This little Jeep model shows off the pretty face and famous grille that no longer has the seven slots as they are blocked, and this concept car has an electric motor.

Tychy will also produce another city SUV, Stellantis, which will be destined for the Alfa Romeo brand. The one we now call the Brennero, but which could be called the Palade, will also take over the base of the 2008 Peugeot as well as its thermal and electric motors. Heat engines, because until 2035 it will always be possible to sell heat engines. Thus, under the hood there will be a 1.2 PureTech gasoline engine, which should receive the support of a micro-hybridization system in order to consume less and reduce CO2 emissions. While the “children’s” Jeep will appear in the first half of 2023, the Alfa Romeo Brennero will appear only in 2024.

We'll have to wait to discover Alfa Romeo, which won't arrive until 2024. It will be Milan's first urban SUV and also the first model to be equipped with a 100% electric motor.

The third and last city SUV produced in Poland. This is a model from Fiat, which should repeat the style of the Centoventi concept car. What’s more, documents shared during the presentation of the concept car at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show show an illustration of a fighter model based on this Centoventi that could match this future model. For Fiat, like for Jeep, this is the second urban SUV as it will be positioned under the Fiat 500 X. The Fiat 500 X will change generation in 2024. Peugeot 2008 platform. This is the technical base that will serve the new urban SUV and the future Centoventi family, as it is a true model family. In fact, Fiat will replace the Panda, and since mini cars are no longer popular, the Panda’s replacement will be this Centoventi, which will be a versatile city car. It will exist in a city body and possibly be considered the successor to the Fiat Punto (it could also borrow that name) and will also exist in a city SUV. The urban SUV, which could be the first model of this new family of practical and affordable models, will hit the market in 2024.

By increasing the number of urban SUVs, the Stellantis group wants to become a key player in the sector and take market share from some of its competitors such as the Renault Captur and Nissan Juke, as well as the Volkswagen trio of Volkswagen T-Cross, Taigo and Barter. .

*Frans Timmermans, Vice President of the Green Pact Commission, indicated that the Commission will conduct an inventory of plug-in hybrid engines in 2026 to see if there is a possibility to keep the technology beyond 2035. Synthetic fuels will also be considered at this time.
