Video presentation – Peugeot 408: the original sedan

Within a few years, in particular through the sale of the second generation of its 308 compact, the French brand has significantly increased its sales and established itself as a premium manufacturer in the image of Volkswagen on the German side. To this end, the lion has developed models with assertive looks, high-quality and modern interiors and, above all, first-class handling on the road. The recipe works, that’s for sure, but you need to consider upgrading yourself and/or investing in new areas. And that’s exactly what Peugeot has decided to do now, taking on a new category with this 408, which was developed at the same time as Peugeot’s latest compact.

As is often the case with Peugeot, the 408 is not without personality, especially the front end.

When you first discover this 408, you wonder which world it belongs to: an SUV or a sedan? Both ? It is inspired by the stylistic codes of two categories. Like the brand’s recent creations, this 408 has a very strong identity. First of all, this happens through the radiator grille. As always, it is particularly wide, has the latest logo in its center and is distinguished above all by the fact that it takes on body color as standard. However, it diverges in shape at the level of the projectors as it appears to bend to reach the base of the projectors. The visual effect is guaranteed. As with other Peugeot models, it’s all limited to near-vertical saber-shaped daytime running lights. The lower part of the shield, for its part, is occupied by a large air intake.

In profile, the line is quite smooth. The long, very horizontal hood ends with a soft spout. The logo present on the 308’s front fenders – only on high trims – migrates onto the doors. They benefit from pronounced body lines, especially at the bottom. Otherwise, this 408 mixes genres, using elements from the off-road world with body protection, 4 cm more ground clearance and large diameter wheels that can reach 20 inches, with a unique design. And of course, there are still certain codes for coupe-sedans with a pronounced lowering of the roof.

Contrary to what you might think, this is not a real window.

The especially massive bumper will still be black.

To enhance this feeling, Peugeot used a trick. Contrary to what one might think, this is not a real quarter window, but just a piece of plastic that serves as an extension of the glazing. One of the features of this 408 is its particularly bulky bumper, which will always be black. The designers have made it an aesthetic element that marks a break with the bodywork. The arrow-shaped rear is adorned with very thin taillights identical to those of the 308, and the most observant will notice a tailgate spoiler similar to that of the Lamborghini Urus.

Record rear capacity

In addition to the assertive style, the 408 has an important advantage: its especially spacious rear is the largest among the brand’s models. This is enough to carry two or even three passengers in optimum comfort, especially since the transmission tunnel has been reduced. No problem for the guards on the roof, despite the fall of the flag. To do this, Peugeot used the 308’s EMP2 platform, extending the wheelbase to 2.79m. European occupiers will be spoiled, but we must not forget that this criterion is important in China, a market in which the 408 must also find its place. The trunk has an interesting load volume as it ranges from 536 liters for petrol versions to 475 liters for PHEV versions. It’s accessed through a large tailgate, but you have to deal with a loading sill that’s 15cm higher than a regular sedan.

Judging by the wheelbase, this 408 is larger, more substantial than the 308, since the length reaches 4.69 m, or 32 cm more than the compact lion (4.37 m). Front and rear overhangs are important. With these dimensions, the 408 is moving away from the compact sedans category to enter the family sedans category in the D segment, even if that means eclipsing the 508.

Much less originality in the cabin, the dashboard is identical to the 308. It still has its impact with the latest generation i-cockpit, which, as a reminder, consists of high-quality 3D digital instruments, a small steering wheel. double flat surface wheel and 10″ multimedia screen powered by the latest particularly smooth and ergonomic operating system. It has digital shortcuts to select temperature, radio or phone.

Diesel ran out

Under the hood, there are no special innovations, except that this 408 refuses a diesel engine. Therefore, it will offer a 130 hp Puretech petrol unit, two rechargeable hybrids (180 hp and 225 hp) and, later on, a 100% electric version, such as the 308.

The production process of the 408 has been made more reliable and streamlined by the creation of a mini-line.

Manufactured in Mulhouse, the 408 has benefited from all the brand’s know-how acquired since its promotion to a higher market. So Peugeot created a mini-line, a kind of scaled-down factory, to make the production process more reliable and streamlined. Thus, over the five months of its existence, 200 cars were assembled here, i.e. one model every 3 days, while on a traditional conveyor, 10 hours are enough. Enough to finalize the last details before the production stage.

The Peugeot 408 will go on sale in January 2023. Prices are still unknown, but it is already known that the lineup will consist of three trim levels: Allure, Allure Pack and GT. While waiting for its marketing, one thing is for sure: this 408 should be one of the stars of the next Mondial de Paris in October.
